How to make eating meat more healthy
From a TCM perspective the body requires meat to build blood. Without any meat in the diet, there can be a tendency to become ”blood deficient”, a condition in which blood and energy are weak, similar to anemia in western medicine but which also involves problems with reproduction, muscles and joints. As with any other food however, meat should not be eaten in excess. So when we do eat it how can we make it as digestible and healthy as possible? According to Paul Pitchford and his book Healing with Whole Foods, the following rules apply to all meat, including poultry and fish.
-
Eat no more than 3 ounces of meat at one daily meal
-
Slice the meat into pieces and let it marinate in one of the following acidic solutions for at least 30 minutes:apple cider vinegar with 2 parts waterlemon juicetomato juicebeerwineother alcoholic beverages with 2 parts water
- Cook the meat in a soup or broth with ginger root to help rid toxins from the meat. Add the herb marjoram in cooking to help digest fats.
-
Always eat green vegetables, such as leafy greens, or sulfurous vegetables (eg cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, onion, garlic) with meat to help digestion of protein and fat.
