Tight hamstrings? Try this Qigong exercise
Here is an other exercise from The Eight Brocades. It massages tight hamstrings and calf muscles, at the same time internally balancing qi in kidneys and urinary bladder.
-
Stand naturally with feet pelvic width apart and palms of the hands placed on the buttocks. Exhale and let the hands slide lightly down the back of the legs, calves, ankles or as far as you can reach while bending down comfortably. Do not attempt this if you have a spinal injury or condition for which bending is inadvisable. Remember your body is your baby, do not cause any pain.
-
Inhale as you slowly come back up, again massaging the backs of the legs lightly until you reach the original standing position.
-
With the hands resting on the buttocks again, continue to inhale and rise up onto the toes, just for a moment holding the breath. Then rest the feet back on the ground and repeat the whole movement from the beginning.
Do the movements fluidly, but not brusquely. Not too fast, not too slow. Repeat up to 9 times. Breathe in and out through the nose only. As you lightly massage the legs imagine you are bringing healing qi into the entire upper body. The urinary bladder meridian (channel of qi/energy) runs down either side of the spine, through the buttocks and down the back of the legs and into the feet.
