The Six Healing Sounds
The Six Healing Sounds are a wonderful ancient, self-healing Taoist Qigong exercise for releasing stress caused by pent up emotions in the five internal organs (lungs, kidneys, heart, liver, spleen) and in the Triple Warmer which regulates body temperature and metabolism. According to TCM, if negative emotions are not released they will store up in the organs and over time will cause damage to the physical body. In this exercise different sounds are used to transform the emotions into healing energy.
Practice in the following order every day, or whenever you are feeling emotionally stressed. Sit on the edge of a chair with your back upright and feet shoulder width apart. The starting position and ending position for the hands is palm up on the thighs. Each sound is made three times before moving onto the next.
- Lung Sound: On an inhale raise the hands overhead with palms up and with the fingertips touching. Look up and on an exhale slowly make the sound SSSSSSSS, like a snake. Return the hands to the thighs, close the eyes and smile into the lungs. Imagine healing white energy replacing sadness with courage
- Kidney Sound: On an inhale lean forward and clasp the hands around the knees. On an exhale make the sound WOOOOOO slowly, as if blowing out a candle. Return the hands to the thighs, close the eyes and smile into the kidneys. Imagine healing blue energy replacing fear with gentleness.
- Liver Sound: On an inhale raise the hands above the head palm up and interlock the fingers. Lean slightly to the left and look up. On an exhale slowly make the sound SHHHHHHH. Return the hands to the thighs, close the eyes and smile into the liver. Imagine healing green energy replacing anger with kindness.
- Heart Sound: On an inhale raise the hands above the head palm up and interlock the fingers. Lean slightly to the right and look up. On an exhale and with the mouth wide open slowly make the sound HAWWWWWW. Return the hands to the thighs, close the eyes and smile into the heart. Imagine healing red energy replacing hate with love.
- Spleen Sound: With the fingers of each hand touching and hands palm facing the body, place the hands slightly to the left under the ribcage. On an inhale push gently upwards and under the left ribs. On an exhale slowly make the sound WHOOOOOO, like the word ”who”. Return the hands to the thighs, close the eyes and smile into the spleen. Imagine healing yellow energy replacing worry with compassion.
For the Triple Warmer sound lie down on your back. On an inhale bring the hands over the head, palms facing towards the toes. On an exhale slowly make the sound HEEEEEEE at the same time bringing the hands down over the body towards the feet, as if flattening the body from head to toe with a giant rolling pin. Place the hands by the sides, close the eyes and relax. This sound helps to balance all energies from the other sounds. If done last thing at night in bed it will help you sleep.
