    Skincare and Beauty Products

spearmint and lemon balm soap by Durova
The largest organ of the body is the skin. In Chinese medicine and the Five Element Theory the vitality of the skin is controlled by the lungs. We breathe through our skin. If a clove of garlic is rubbed on the sole of the foot, only a few hours later we can smell it on our breath! In fact everything that is applied to the skin will be directly absorbed into the body, whether it is healthy for us or not. Soap, shampoo, deodorants, skincare products and cosmetics, suntan lotions……all are absorbed. It is best to avoid anything containing chemical solvents or synthetic additives, as they will negatively affect the immune system. Be careful with so-called ‘natural’ products too, as these frequently list harmful chemicals. Unfortunately, just because you buy a product from Whole Foods or any other health food store does not automatically make it healthy. Try making your own beauty products at home. Unrefined oils such as coconut butter, sesame and olive oil make excellent body lotions and even moisturizers for the face. Many wholesome and inexpensive foods, such as lemon, eggs, oatmeal, aloe vera, honey, milk, cucumber, may be used to make cleansers and other toiletry products. Pamper your skin with food.  A good rule of thumb to follow is:  Don’t apply anything to your skin that you wouldn’t put in your mouth and eat!
