More Holistic Therapies explored
Here is a brief introduction to three more healing modalities.
Reiki
Reiki (translated as spiritual ki energy) was developed in Japan in 1922 by a Buddhist named Mikai Usui. It is similar to ”laying on hands” and is a spiritual practice to promote relaxation and healing. Two main branches of Reiki exist today: traditional Japanese and Western. The practitioner uses the palms of his hands either intuitively or in 12 different positions in tune with the body’s chakras to transfer energy to the patient, who usually lies down on a massage table, dressed in comfortable clothing. The Reiki master may touch or hold his palms an inch or two away from the client’s body. Anyone can train to become a Reiki master; the first level is taught for self-healing and healing others; the second level for distance healing; and the third for teaching Reiki.
Reflexology
Although Reflexology has its roots in ancient Egypt, China and Japan, it was developed in Europe and Russia in the nineteenth century. It evolved further in the US and again in Asia in the twentieth century. In Reflexology the feet and hands represent a map of the whole body’s nervous system which can be treated through applying pressure using thumb, finger and hand techniques without the use of oils or creams. The left side of the body is mirrored on the left foot or hand, and the right side of the body on the right foot or hand. Research has shown Reflexology to be beneficial for a variety of physical and psychological conditions, including pain reduction; increasing blood flow to the brain, kidneys and intestines; and relieving depression and anxiety. In general, a Reflexology session lasts from 30 minutes to an hour.
