If I have acupuncture for my headaches, will it also treat my hiccups?
One of the significant ways in which eastern medicine differs from western medicine is that the former treats the whole person, while the latter treats only the symptoms. So it follows that if you go for an acupuncture treatment, your acupuncturist is not going to treat just the problem you mention to him, but – after careful diagnosis of your pulse, examination of your tongue, channel and abdominal palpation, and numerous questions – he will needle you according to a pattern of disharmony, not a condition. These patterns are generally grouped into four pairs of opposites:
Yin and Yang
Interior and Exterior
Deficiency and Excess
Hot and Cold
Treating a particular pattern will often result in the elimination or reduction of other symptoms which you, as the patient, may not have recognized, or even thought to mention as being part and parcel of the problem you walked in with. Bear this in mind at your next visit and talk about any and all seemingly unrelated concerns you may have. If you think this might be too long a list, then prioritize and mention your top three health concerns. Remember that everything in your mind and body is connected in some way, just as ripples at the center of a lake will eventually reach the shore.
