Does eating salads really help you lose weight?

Huge plates of salads seem to be a staple of most every weight loss diet, but are they actually doing any good? In Oriental and Eastern medicine that would all depend on the individual’s basic constitution and current condition. People who are naturally hot in constitution and temperament, would certainly benefit from including plenty of fresh, raw vegetables in their daily diet. However, those who tend to feel the cold more, are easily fatigued and have a less fiery temper would do more harm than good by consuming cold salads every day, especially in winter time. Again, it all comes down to moderation and looking at every individual as just that: one of a kind. In TCM and in Ayurveda, the holistic system of health in India, the digestive system is seen as a wood burning furnace which needs to be kept warm. For those who have weak digestion eating raw foods would be like trying to keep a low fire going with cold damp wood. A better choice would be warming vegetable soups and casseroles to flame the fire. If, however, you do have a strong digestion, feel generally hot rather than cold, and have good energy and stamina, salads would be beneficial. In this case, try whenever possible to choose local, organic raw vegetables and, whatever their source, always wash them well.
