What is Animal Acupuncture and how does it work?
In Oriental Medicine it is believed that pathways called Meridians run throughout the body. Qi (pronounce Chee), Chinese for energy, runs along these meridians. When the Qi cannot flow smoothly, a person or animal can develop both physical and mental symptoms. By inserting minute needles into the body in points along these meridians, an acupuncturist can help the Qi flow properly. When the Qi is flowing smoothly the body can heal itself. Just like humans, animals can be treated for a variety of health conditions. This form of medicine is complimentary to regular veterinary medicine and should be used in conjunction with regular veterinary care.
What types of conditions can my pet be treated for?
While acupuncture is effective for treating a wide variety of diseases, acupuncture is most commonly recognized for treating the following problems in animals:
Pain
Allergies
Lameness
Skin conditions
Arthritis
Neurological Disorders
Digestive Problems
Hot Spots
Unexplained Illness
Some Behavioral Issues
Stress
Do Animals Feel the Acupuncture Needles?
Acupuncture needles are very different from injection needles. Acupuncture needles are much smaller, in most cases just slightly thicker than a strand of hair. Acupuncture needles taper at the end to slide smoothly into the point with minimal or no sensation Most pets do not mind the needle sensation and many seem not to acknowledge it at all. Within a few treatments, animals are actually happy to see the acupuncturist.
How often will my pet need Treatments?
In acute conditions a pet may need acupuncture once or twice a week. Bringing your pet in more frequently would not allow the animal time to respond to the treatments and may cause your pet some unnecessary stress. When symptoms improve your pet can go two or three weeks between treatments. After your pet recovers fully they may come in for maintenance treatments once a month or once a season. It is important to remember that animals respond much quicker than humans with acupuncture. However, it is also important to bring your pet in at the first sign of any old symptoms reoccurring. Regular “tune up” treatments are a good form of preventative medicine.
